Why am I addicted to porn, fantasy, and/or sex?
Pornography and sex addiction are at epidemic highs. Both have always existed, yet the access was not as it is now.
- In the 1970s, if you wanted to see pornography, you had to go to an adult theater or purchase an adult magazine.
- In the 1980s, you had to do the above or have a VCR and privacy at home.
- In the 1990s, you could do the above or join an online porn website from your computer at home (credit card and privacy both required).
- In the mid-2000s, smart phones became available and that changed everything. Now all you needed was to take your smart phone with you to the bathroom and you immediately could have both privacy and porn access.
- Then, a few years later Porn Hub launched. With this launching, free porn became available to everyone with an internet connection.
Sex addiction has also reached an all-time high, too. Nowadays, there are many websites and apps designed for anonymous sex. Even introverts can now find sex partners without needing any social skills. Dating values have also changed and quick sex within relationships has become normalized.
Most people are unaware as to how this crept up on them. That is how. It is easy and free, and extremely rewarding to the brain--similar to methamphetamine. Fantasies between viewing porn feed sexual addiction and can sometimes lead to sexual anorexia.
Sexual anorexia can be caused from pornography warping your perceptions of sexuality and creating unrealistic expectations that lead to dissatisfaction or disinterest in real-life sexual experiences. Repeated exposure to pornographic material can desensitize individuals to sexual stimuli, making it more difficult to experience arousal or pleasure during sexual encounters with real-life partners.
It has never been easier than it is today, and to stop these behaviors which are rewarding to the brain requires real work.
Most of the time, people hide their pornography addiction and sex addiction due to the shame associated with sexual deviancy. Not talking about what you are going through makes each person an island without support. It is difficult to overcome addiction alone. If you want to change, you must make a choice to actively change.
